Janet Fries Appointed Chair of ABA’s Copyright Division

Washington, D.C. Of Counsel Janet Fries has accepted the role of Chair of the Copyright Division of the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Intellectual Property Law for 2019−2020.

The ABA IP Section has approximately 17,000 members and is the world’s largest association of IP lawyers. The Copyright and Related Rights Division comprises nine committees that specialize in Computer Programs and New Technology; Copyright Legislation; Copyright Litigation; Copyright Office Affairs; Copyright and Social Media; International Copyright Treaties and Laws; Literary Works; Music, Sound Recording, and Performing Artists; Visual Arts, Dramatic Works, and Motion Pictures.

Janet has been active in the IP Section for many years. Janet recently completed a four-year term as one of sixteen members of the ABA IP Council. She also is a member of the ABA’s Copyright Reform Task Force, and previously chaired the Copyright Division from 2013 to 2015.

Janet is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, a global honorary society of lawyers, judges, law faculty and legal scholars who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the profession and service to society. Membership is by nomination and limited to one percent of lawyers admitted to practice in the United States and a limited number of lawyers in international jurisdictions.
