Sarah Millar Quoted in Modern Healthcare Regarding Faith-Based Health Systems

Chicago partner Sarah Bassler Millar was quoted in a Modern Healthcare article titled, “Faith-based health systems wait on Supreme Court to resolve high-stakes pension disputes.” The article discusses a recent increase in litigation that questions whether faith-based health systems should be exempt from federal regulations governing their pension plans.

Dignity Health, Advocate Health Care and St. Peter’s Healthcare System asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review federal appeals court decisions that eliminated their church-plan exemptions from ERISA. Shortly after the article was published, the Court consolidated the three cases and granted the health systems’ petition for certiorari.

“There are some advantages of church-plan status,” Sarah said. “It gives you more flexibility to ensure that your plan is appropriately tailored to your organization and to your ministry.”
