Guilherme M. Costa Named General Counsel of the South Dakota Board of Regents, effective in January 2016

Alumnus Guilherme M. Costa has been named the incoming general counsel of the South Dakota Board of Regents upon the retirement of it's long-time counsel, James Shekleton, in early 2016. Guilherme will work closely with Mr. Shekleton over the coming weeks as he transitions into the new role.

Mike Rush, the regents’ executive director and CEO said, "we are happy to have Guilherme join the system’s senior management team. He brings valuable experience to this position in his past work as an associate general counsel and then as the deputy general counsel for a land-grant and primary research public university. His professional practice advising university administrators, with particular emphasis in the areas of student services, contracts, litigation, and compliance, will be immediately useful to the South Dakota higher education system. We look forward to his counsel.”

Guilherme was a summer associate in the firm's Washington, D.C. office in the summer of 2007 and then joined us as full-time associate in the Health care practice group in the fall of 2008. He remained with the firm until he became Associate General Counsel for the University of Idaho in July 2010. Prior to joining the South Dakota Board of Regents, Guilherme was Deputy General Counsel for the University of Idaho.

Guilherme earned bachelor's degrees in business administration and political science from the University of Florida and holds a juris doctor degree from the University of Notre Dame Law School.
