Baker & Daniels' Kathy Osborn Is Candidate for Indiana Judicial Commissions

Kathy L. Osborn, a partner and experienced litigator at Baker & Daniels LLP, has filed as a candidate for the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission and the Indiana Commission on Judicial Qualifications.

Osborn will be on the October ballot for the 2011 to 2013 attorney position representing the 2nd District, which includes Marion, Hamilton, Madison, Delaware, Tippecanoe, Howard and 13 other counties. With her professional experience, background and knowledge of the Indiana judicial system, Osborn is uniquely qualified to serve on the commissions.

"I would be honored to serve as the first female attorney elected to the commissions," Osborn said. "I believe that I would bring a balanced perspective to the commissions in that I'm not solely a plaintiff's lawyer or solely a defense lawyer. My desire is to be a true representative."

At Baker & Daniels, Osborn is a commercial, antitrust and appellate litigator and an antitrust compliance counselor. She represents businesses and individuals in state and federal courts in an array of areas, including antitrust, estate/probate/trust, product liability, administrative procedure, contract and torts. Osborn has significant experience in multi-district litigation proceedings and complex antitrust litigation. She regularly counsels business entities on various antitrust matters, including practices and conduct under the Sherman, Clayton and Robinson-Patman Acts and comparable state laws.

Osborn currently chairs the Appellate Practice Section of the Indianapolis Bar Association. She also is a member of the Indiana State Bar Association, Indiana Protection and Advocacy Commission, Day Nursery Association Board of Directors, 7th Circuit Bar Association and American Bar Association.

Since 2000, Osborn has been a regular author and commentator on civil litigation cases for the Indiana State Bar Association's monthly journal, Res Gestae. Before joining Baker & Daniels in 2000, she clerked for Justices Frank Sullivan, Jr. and Myra C. Selby of the Indiana Supreme Court, providing her with a strong foundation for her appellate practice.

Osborn graduated magna cum laude from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law in Bloomington in 1999. She received a bachelor of science degree in biology magna cum laude and a bachelor of arts degree in religious studies summa cum laude, both from Indiana University in 1987.

Before becoming a lawyer, Osborn worked 11 years for Indiana University's Institute on Disability and Community. She secured grants, managed systems change efforts, conducted research and training on organizational change and inclusion, and supported schools and community organizations to include people with disabilities.

In 2006, Osborn was selected by Whirlpool for a Mother of Invention Award for designing a programmable musical mobile. She also is a former Big Sister of the Year for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of South Central Indiana.

ABOUT NOMINATING & QUALIFICATIONS COMMISSIONS

The Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission selects nominees to fill vacancies on the Indiana Supreme Court, Court of Appeals and Tax Court; to select the Chief Justice of Indiana; and to certify former Indiana judges as Senior Judges. The Indiana Commission on Judicial Qualifications investigates complaints alleging judicial ethical misconduct; prosecutes violations of the Code of Judicial Conduct when warranted; and advises judges and judicial candidates about their ethical obligations. Both are comprised of the same seven commissioners, one of whom is the Chief Justice of Indiana. The governor appoints three non-attorney, citizen commissioners — one from each of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Districts of the Court of Appeals. Attorneys in good standing elect an attorney commissioner from each of the same three districts.
