John Phillips works principally with companies that own extensive patent portfolios, establishing long-term relationships with his clients that enable him to develop in-depth knowledge of their businesses and to leverage patents to further their business goals. He likens his signature analysis to finding gold nuggets and using them to strengthen each client’s position in the marketplace. With more than 21 years of experience at highly regarded intellectual property law firms, John maintains a national client base, including doing a large amount of portfolio analysis work for clients such as Microsoft and eBay.

John is experienced in all phases of patent prosecution, including counseling, patentability assessments, and preparation and procurement of patents in the mechanical and software (graphical user interface) fields as well as reissue and reexamination of previously issued patents. In addition to his emphasis on patent prosecution and portfolio analysis, John has experience with patent infringement and validity investigations and has participated in a number of significant patent infringement litigation matters from the perspective of both a plaintiff and a defendant. He also has counseled clients on a variety of other intellectual property matters, including trademark procurement, usage and infringement.

Personal Interests

In his spare time, John and his family volunteer at a local animal shelter and foster dogs awaiting adoption (which has led to a growing number of permanent foster dogs living in the house). He also enjoys basketball, tennis, skiing and other outdoor activities.
