Bennett Borden Discusses Hiring and Retention of Data Scientists With Legaltech News

In an article titled “Law Firms Want Data Scientists, But Can They Retain Them Long Term?,” Legaltech News turned to artificial intelligence and algorithmic decision-making team co-leader and the firm’s chief data scientist, Bennett Borden, for his commentary on the importance of law firms hiring and retaining data scientists.

Borden explained that, as he has been hiring new talent, candidates repeatedly expressed their desire to work in a supportive and rich learning environment. “[For] many of the data scientists we have hired, the questions they asked are about ‘are there other people to work with?’ Data scientists love to learn and to ping ideas off each other, and so being a lone man of the Garden of Eden data scientist is not nearly as much fun as being part of a community,” he said.

“I think that having a data science and data analytics capability is absolutely required for a 21st century law firm. Firms that are practicing law the old-fashioned way are extinct. They just don’t know it yet. It’s like the day before the meteor hit the dinosaurs,” Borden noted. “Any question that a lawyer is looking for, the answer is in data somewhere and if you know how to get that answer…that is incredibly valuable.”
