Minding the Access Gap: Addressing Both the Digital and Transportation Divides to Improve Outcomes

Health Affairs

Faegre Drinker Consulting Principal Mike Adelberg authored an article for Health Affairs covering the expansion of telehealth during the pandemic, which has resulted in improved access to many outpatient services. However, this has also led to digital and transportation divides in that marginalized patients may not have benefitted equally.

First, Adelberg defined the phrase “digital divide.” Next, he addressed uncertainties equated with telehealth and how nonemergency medical transportation could be an alternative to telehealth. Adelberg also outlined strategies to improve how the health care sector can narrow the transportation divide.

In conclusion, Adleberg emphasized that many innovations over the past year have shown that access-related reforms are possible. He recommended having the foresight to use transportation as a complementary tool to enhance health care access for patients.
