Corporate Counsel Features Mercedes Meyer’s Work on the IPO’s Gender Diversity in Innovation Toolkit

Drinker Biddle partner Mercedes Meyer was featured in the Corporate Counsel article “Lawyers Build Tool Kit to Help Companies Find Creativity, Voice of Women Inventors.”

The publication highlighted Meyer’s involvement in the development and launch of the Intellectual Property Owners Association’s (IPO) Women in IP Committee’s “Gender Diversity in Innovation Toolkit.”

Meyer told Corporate Counsel that she and her colleagues in the IPO were shocked by the statistics on how few patents were held by women. “We decided we can fix this,” Meyer said to the publication. “We know the issues, the patent process, and the people.”

Meyer, along with Michelle Bugbee, senior intellectual property counsel at Eastman Chemical Co., and Sandra Nowak, assistant chief IP counsel at 3M Innovative Properties, teamed up to develop the “Gender Diversity in Innovation Toolkit,” a blueprint for companies to assess and cultivate gender parity in innovation.

The article also featured comments from Scott Barker, director of global patent development at Micron Technology Inc. Micron was one of several companies that served as early testers of the tool kit. Barker told Corporate Counsel that he “received strong support” from his general counsel as well as the company CEO.

The 96-page tool kit “is a crowdsourcing solution to an implicit bias problem that is influencing corporate and university bottom lines,” Meyer said. If women inventors fail to bring forward their creative ideas, then American business ultimately suffers because of the “lost Edisons and Einsteins,” she explained.
