Faegre Baker Daniels partner and former Indiana state senator Murray Clark participated in a roundtable hosted by Gerry Dick on Inside Indiana Business focusing on business expansions and politics in Indiana.
Clark was optimistic about the direction Indiana is heading, citing the increase in shipments to Indiana ports, and more specifically, the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor. Clark said that Burns Harbor brings "tremendous potential up there especially given the fact that freight tends to stall in Chicago, so there's great growth potential there," suggesting that shippers may be swayed by easier access to Burns Harbor when compared to Chicago.
The roundtable also touched on the decrease in revenue from state gaming in Indiana, and what the legislature may do in the upcoming session to address the issue. "I think the legislature is going to continue to be asked to adjust and allow casinos and gaming facilities to be more competitive. It's allowing them to compete better with Ohio with Michigan, with Illinois with more potential gaming."
Clark added that while most believe an increase in gaming would give a competitive edge to Indiana, the issue is a thorny one at the Indiana Statehouse. "It really is a tough issue because there are very few people in the legislature, and I would suspect in the executive branch, that would like to be known as somebody who expanded gaming."
