How Can States Maximize Funding From the BEAD Program?

Telecommunications partner Laura Phillips authored an article for Government Technology that discusses the new federal Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) program and what states should do to prepare for the awards of infrastructure bill money coming through the program.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) will grant states and territories $42.45 billion in funding through the BEAD program, which can then be awarded to subgrantees for projects including the construction of new or extended broadband facilities in unserved or underserved areas. Phillips emphasizes that while the NTIA will launch BEAD program rules in May, states should start preparing now.

Phillips also outlines critical activities required to participate in the BEAD program, including preparing letters of intent, initial and final proposals, five-year plans describing the State’s broadband investment priorities and costs, presenting processes on how it plans to award subgrants, filing reports with the NTIA and more.
