Cyberattackers Continue to Threaten COVID-19 Vaccine Supply Chains

Cybersecurity and data strategy counsel Jason G. Weiss authored an article for the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy describing the increase in cyber threats to all sectors of the COVID-19 vaccine supply chain.

Weiss detailed how, in December 2020, law enforcement agencies prepared for criminal activity and organized crime linked to COVID-19 vaccine distribution. He explained that cyberattacks targeting vaccine manufacturers and public health organizations led national and international agencies to issue security alerts regarding efforts to infiltrate or disrupt distribution chains.

In addition to vaccine manufacturers, Weiss noted that cyberattacks extended to other sectors of the supply chain, including distributors, “cold chain” companies responsible for safely storing and transporting the vaccines and health care providers. He also shared steps that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recommended for mitigating cyber threats.

In conclusion, Weiss emphasized that “cyberattacks against all actors in the COVID-19 supply chain” will continue and stated, “It is time for all health care providers to take a more proactive role in the protection of their infrastructure and facilities.”
