Mercedes Meyer Comments on World IP Review’s 2020 Survey on Diversity and Inclusion
Mercedes Meyer commented on World IP Review (WIPR)’s survey on diversity and inclusion that was featured in its 2020 edition of Influential Women in IP. In the article “Positive Strides,” Meyer urges the legal industry to get to the root cause of the lack of diversity, noting that action and accountability are among the shortfalls in the United States. Meyer notes that while law firms and companies can say they are committed to diversity and inclusion, without action and accountability they fail to improve. Meyer added that the traditional legal model is flawed from the start, and that the billable hour is one of the greatest barriers to ensuring diversity in practice. According to Meyer, the billable hour works against non-billable time for mentoring and training of new individuals to the legal profession.
