Sarah-Lloyd Stevenson Discusses the ‘Paradigm Shift’ in Telemedicine with Business Insider

Business Insider reports that doctors and patients are using telehealth at unprecedented levels compared with before the coronavirus pandemic. In the article, "'There's Been a Paradigm Shift': Telemedicine Lobbying Soars Nearly 200% in Push to Capitalize on Coronavirus Pandemic and Make Permanent Changes to Washington Policy," the publication turned to director and COVID-19 Task Force co-leader Sarah-Lloyd Stevenson for insight into the rise of telemedicine during the pandemic and beyond.

Stevenson told Business Insider that "there's been a paradigm shift in the last three months of where telehealth policy is and where it's heading."

The article further highlighted new resources created by the government that encourages people to seek out telemedicine services – including a new website, www.telehealth.hhs.gov, new funding for telehealth programs and infrastructure under the CARES Act, and the Drug Enforcement Administration’s decision to loosen remote prescribing restrictions.

"It is shocking to me, in a good way, how far we've come in the past couple of months," Stevenson added.

Looking ahead to life after the pandemic, Stevenson told Business Insider that "if the feds flip the switch and it goes back to how it was, that's not going to be a popular decision. We need to be thinking right now about what happens after."
