Susan Kline Provides Insight on Employer Expense Reimbursement for SHRM

Labor & Employment partner Susan Kline gave comment in an article from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) about the way employees and businesses are approaching professional development during to the COVID-19 pandemic. Namely, Kline provided insight on whether or not employers should reimburse nonrefundable expenses incurred due to the pandemic.

“If the employer paid for the professional development and travel in the first place, any cancellation costs would generally be absorbed by the employer,” said Kline. "If it's something the employee signed up for as a personal matter for a weekend or vacation, employers might treat it like any other vacation." She also noted that some states, such as California, require employers to reimburse reasonable business expenses.
