Katherine Armstrong Quoted in Compliance Week on FTC Data Security Compliance

Washington, D.C., counsel Katherine E. Armstrong was quoted in a Compliance Week article titled “FTC expands scope of data security compliance requirements.” The article examined a trio of recently proposed settlements and the FTC’s data security compliance requirements.

As it relates to a June 12 proposed settlement referenced in the article Katherine said, “The consent order does provide some guidance as to what the FTC considers appropriate given the facts set forth in the complaint.” While the consent orders serve as valuable guidance, they should be taken with a grain of salt. “There is no one-size-fits-all for what is appropriate data security,” she said. “It really is based on what is appropriate for a particular company based on the type of data collected and how it is used.”
