Mercedes Meyer Discusses Gender Challenges and Progress in Managing Intellectual Property

Washington, D.C. partner Mercedes Meyer was quoted in the Managing Intellectual Property article titled “International Women’s Day: IP Counsel Reflect on Gender Challenges and Progress.” A special feature for International Women’s Day on March 8, this feature article spotlights counsel at companies including Uber, Xerox, Micron and others and their views on the progress and path of women in the world of Intellectual Property.

In the article, Mercedes discussed the value of diversity in IP for the progress of innovation and patented ideas, noting that women “obviously bring something different to the table” given that gender-diverse companies are 15% more likely to financially outperform non-diverse companies. She also addressed mentorship in the context of the #METOO movement and said the movement could hurt women in IP if men choose not to mentor them.

Mercedes stressed that we have to constantly ask questions to understand which initiatives supporting women in various fields are most impactful. Lastly, she remarked on the path forward for women in IP and said, “I feel like Gene Kranz [flight director for the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission], who said, ‘Let’s work the problem people! Let’s not make the problem worse by guessing.’ Find the problematic algorithm, get rid of it, and try something different and new."
