Long-Term Planning Hasn't Prevented Short-Term Progress in Gary, Indiana Revitalization, Bo Kemp Says

Last year, officials in Gary, Indiana received a federal grant to fund the development of a long-term plan to rejuvenate University Park, the neighborhood that connects Indiana University Northwest and Ivy Tech Community College. Consultants including Bo Kemp, senior director for FaegreBD Consulting and director of the City of Gary Economic Development Committee, have been holding meetings and public hearings on the subject since last year and expect to release a development plan in June 2016.


But the consultants have done more than just talk. As detailed in the Chicago Tribune, Kemp took the opportunity at an April 14 hearing to highlight the committee’s successes. In recent months, they have demolished a number of structures and relocated residents to make way for new residential options. The committee has also led a number of cleanup efforts to clear trash and debris along 35th Avenue and a number of vacant lots.
