Signal and Noise: Identity Crisis

Washington, D.C. of counsel Jason R. Baron recently published an article in Legaltech News titled, “Identity Crisis,” as the latest installment of his column entitled “Signal and Noise.”  The article discussed data mining and how it can easily be used to de-anonymize a user.

Today, personally identifiable information (PII) and personal health information (PHI) are types of information that are regularly protected. However, due to data mining and data linkage, the practice of finding patterns and unionizing data sets, “non-PII” and “non-PHI” information can be combined to re-identify individuals and de-anonymize data.
