Musical Copyright Protection Takes Stage at World IP Day

As a part of Indianapolis' World IP Day on April 27, Time for Three—a trio featuring violinists Zach De Pue and Nick Kendall and double-bassist Ranaan Meyer—performed a medley of popular public-domain songs. Dave Stafford of The Indiana Lawyer covered the event, which was sponsored by Faegre Baker Daniels and included a discussion about musical copyright laws with FaegreBD partner Amie Peele Carter.

Carter, who counts intellectual property matters among her specialties, addressed the difficulties in applying intellectual property laws to the music industry in an era of one-click file-sharing.

“It remains important to strike a balance between rewarding artists for their valuable contributions while also compensating the efforts of those that make that music available to fans and the listening public,” Carter said.
