Synthesizing Areas of Overlap Between Title IX and the Clery Act


Philadelphia partner Scott Coffina and associate Ginene Lewis presented at the Stetson Law National Conference on Law and Higher Education on Friday, February 13. Scott and Ginene provided a full day of programming to university counsel and administrators on issues related to Title IX and Clery Act compliance.

Below is a brief description of each workshop/panel that was led by Scott and Ginene.

1) Synthesizing Areas of Overlap Between Title IX and the Clery Act (Presented by Scott A. Coffina): This workshop assisted administrators with synthesizing the requirements of both mandates and developing the proper controls to ensure simultaneous compliance.

2) Ensuring Compliance and Managing Risks in a Changing Environment: A Discussion with the General Counsel (Moderated by Scott A. Coffina): In this session, legal counsel from the University of Connecticut, Florida State University, and Catholic University of America discussed how they have navigated Title IX investigations and related litigation, manage these risks and oversee their institutions’ compliance efforts.

3) Procedural Steps to Getting it Right: A Look at Sexual Harassment Investigations on College Campuses (Moderated by Ginene A. Lewis): This panel involved a discussion with Title IX coordinators and university counsel about critical issues related to sexual misconduct investigations in this new climate of aggressive administrative enforcement and civil litigation.
