Adapting to Adapting Technologies/Section 101 in 2019: A Look Ahead

Washington, D.C., partner and co-chair of the IP Group Bob Stoll spoke on two panels at the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) 2019 Mid-Winter Institute on January 31 and February 2, 2019. In the first panel, titled “Adapting to Adapting Technologies,” the panelists discussed the patenting of claims that involve artificial intelligence. Bob spoke about the U.S. perspective. Bruce Sunstein from Sunstein Kann Murphy & Timbers, LLP, was the moderator. The other panelists included Christian Platzer from the European Patent Office and Turo Matsuoka from the Japanese Patent Office. Over 200 conference participants attended the panel.

Bob was also a panelist at the Presidents’ Forum. The plenary session was moderated by Barbara Fiacco from Foley Hoag, and the other panelists included Russ Slifer from Schwegman Lundberg; Bob Armitage, a retired GC from Eli Lilly; and Vince Garlock from AIPLA. In the session titled “Section 101 in 2019: A Look Ahead,” Bob analyzed the USPTO Guidelines on Section 101, which were issued on January 7, 2019, and answered several questions from the audience.
