Over 53 percent of PhDs are awarded to women. Yet, only 12 percent of recognized innovators in the United States are women.
Identifying the problem and devising solutions for companies to reconcile this disparity led to the “Gender Diversity in Innovation Toolkit,” developed by the Intellectual Property Owners Association’s Women in IP Committee. Drinker Biddle partner Mercedes Meyer, together with Michelle Bugbee of Eastman Chemical Company and 3M Innovative Properties’ Sandra Nowak, oversaw the first of its kind effort.
The 96-page toolkit is a blueprint for companies to assess and cultivate gender parity in innovation. Included is data from the USPTO, WIPO, NSF and the Institute for Women's Policy Research along with self-evaluation tools and sample communications and presentations for any company to use.
