Drinker Biddle's LGBT Group Hosts Stonewall Commemoration Event

Drinker Biddle’s LGBT Group hosted an event on the anniversary of the June 28, 1969, Stonewall Uprising detailing the important of the historical event and current challenges faced by the LGBT community. The Stonewall Uprising is widely regarded as a turning point in civil rights history and the impetus for the modern LGBT rights movement. The event, set just two weeks after the mass shooting in Orlando, featured presentations and a panel discussion on the current political climate, LGBT freedom, health and safety issues, and how continued activism and coalition-building will further build on the spark that was ignited by the Stonewall Uprising. Held live in the Washington, D.C., office, the event was streamed to Drinker offices throughout the country.

Chairman of the firm, Andy Kassner, introduced and emphasized the importance of the event. Nathan Pollard, associate in the Washington office and head of the LGBT Group, made opening remarks highlighting the tragedy in Orlando and introducing the panelists. Gary Rinkerman, a partner in the D.C. office, detailed the conditions and challenges that led to the Stonewall Uprising. He also spoke about the overall and continuing importance of the example set by those who participated in the Uprising and in the Pride and rights advocacy activities that followed it.

The panel was led by Rob Falk, General Counsel of the Human Rights Campaign, and featured Amy Nelson, Director of Legal Services at Whitman-Walker Health and Rick Rosendall, President of the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance.
