Laura Phillips Quoted in Law360 on FCC Net Neutrality Win

Washington D.C. partner Laura Phillips was quoted in a Law360 article titled, “Net Neutrality Win is Vindication for Wheeler’s FCC.” The article examines the Federal Communications Commission’s recent broadly comprehensive win at the D.C. Circuit on its open internet rules applied to wired and wireless broadband internet service providers. The breadth of the DC Circuit’s 2-1 opinion took many FCC observers by surprise and likely presages more controversial actions by the FCC, under the leadership of Chairman Tom Wheeler.

As a member of the Telecommunications and Mass Media Team at Drinker Biddle, Laura Phillips offered her commentary on the ruling. “The FCC is going to be emboldened in the rest of the Wheeler term to get the other things done that he wanted to get done.”

Laura points out that the DC Circuit’s determination, if ultimately upheld on further review, could be a catalyst for future legislative initiatives. Additionally, the question of how to regulate the internet may be a big enough one to attract the Supreme Court’s attention. “How the internet works and what people’s expectations are for it is a fairly significant matter for the entire U.S. economy. It’s actually significant globally.”
