Former Department of Justice Attorney and IRS Counselor, Joseph A. Rillotta, Joins Drinker Biddle

Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP has strengthened its White Collar Defense and Corporate Investigations team with the addition of Joseph A. Rillotta, who joins the firm as a partner residing in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.

“Joseph is the latest of several leaders we’ve recently added to our White Collar Defense and Corporate Investigations team, a significant and experienced service at the firm,” Andrew C. Kassner, Chairman and CEO of Drinker Biddle. “He brings both public and private legal experience to clients and enhances the overall white collar, general litigation and trial capabilities at the firm and in Washington.”

Previously, Mr. Rillotta was Counselor to the Commissioner at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). In this role he advised the Internal Revenue Commissioner regarding allegations of misconduct by IRS personnel. Mr. Rillotta also oversaw agency responses to Congressional and Inspector General inquires, including investigations concerning tax-exempt organization applications.

Prior to the IRS, Mr. Rillotta was Counsel at Williams & Connolly LLP and a Trial Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice. During his six years in the Tax Division at the U.S. Department of Justice, Mr. Rillotta tried cases to successful results before both judges and juries, including most recently United States v. Fisher, a tax evasion and false statements case in the District of Montana. He was a lead attorney in a series of prosecutions concerning cash-skimming at Las Vegas entertainment venues. Mr. Rillotta also investigated and prosecuted various other tax and financial crimes, often in matters involving extensive grand jury development.

Mr. Rillotta earned his law degree from Harvard Law School and his A.B. in Government from Harvard College.
