Biotechnology Patent Lawyer Janet E. Reed Joins Drinker Biddle

Newest Member of the Firm’s Expanding IP Practice

PHILADELPHIA (May 25, 2006) – The law firm of Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP welcomes Janet E. Reed, Ph.D. as a partner in its Intellectual Property Practice Group.  Her practice is focused on patents related to biotechnological inventions in medicine, agriculture and environmental sciences.  She will be resident in the Firm’s Philadelphia, PA office.

Dr. Reed represents academic and industry clients in domestic and foreign patent prosecution, patent and trademark inter partes proceedings, patent portfolio management and strategic planning, evaluation of new technology, drafting of license and other commercialization agreements, and preparation of opinions on patentability, infringement and freedom to operate.

Dr. Reed’s scientific background includes recombinant DNA technologies, gene expression, cell biology and tissue culture, immunology, microbiology and plant pathology, as well as DNA, RNA and protein purification and analysis.  In addition to her legal career at several law firms, she has 10 years of laboratory experience in biochemistry, molecular biology and plant physiology/pathology, in graduate-level research and as a visiting postdoctoral research scientist at E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Co.  Her scientific work has been published in such respected journals as Biochemistry, The European Journal of Biochemistry and The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.  She is also an active speaker, for example at seminars sponsored by state intellectual property law associations and the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM).

Dr. Reed received her Ph.D. in biochemistry from Rutgers University and her M.S. degree in plant pathology from the University of Nebraska.  She received her law degree, with honors, from Rutgers University School of Law, Camden, where she was a Campbell’s Scholar and an Articles Editor of the Rutgers Law Journal.  She is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Dr. Reed is a member of Philadelphia Intellectual Property Law Association, where she has served on the Board of Governors and as chair of the Chemical Practice Committee. She is a member of the American and Philadelphia Bar Associations, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) and the Licensing Executives Society.
